The Ever-Shifting Ballet of City Sidewalks

Critical Observation

I realize that while urban design provides the stage, the true vitality of public space emerges from the spontaneous, real-time social interactions that no master plan can ever fully dictate.

"The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place and in any place is always replete with new improvisations" Jane Jacobs was on to something all those years ago. It is funny how the challenges our cities face are still the same even today in more ways than one. We are in a constant push and pull to create spaces that serve not just one but a group of very different individuals. Only to realize that the city is always changing, adapting, and therefore does not read the same ten years down the road. Every day brings small variations: different encounters, conflicts, gestures, routines, interruptions, and trends. The city works because people respond to one another in real time. No design can orchestrate every single movement in the urban space."

"That said, I believe this can take on many forms and in fact should: the how may change but the why remains, at it's core, the engine that drives these spaces and that, that remains fixed!"
