The Observer
Reading the city,
one streetscape at a time
I'm an urban designer who has always enjoyed experiencing life unfold in the spaces we inhabit in the city, exploring the sidewalk café that catches the afternoon sun, the multi-functional city square, the old industry building that is now repurposed into an urban magnet, the public and semi-public space where interactions of different facets merge, the alley that becomes a shortcut for an entire neighbourhood, the bench where strangers learn to share silence, the 'olifantenpaadje' that no one can seem to get rid of but is embraced!
Structure vs. Story is my field notebook; a collection of observations gathered over years of walking cities around the world. Each story is a portrait of a place and the people who use it. I measure sidewalks the way others measure success: by how many conversations they hold and the stories they tell.
I've always lived in the space between structure and story: at the intersection of analysis and imagination. As an urban designer, I'm deeply invested in how cities work: the varying densities, the logistics, the public space systems, and the often-unseen frameworks that shape daily life. Yet I'm equally drawn to how cities feel: their rhythms, histories, and the quiet layers of human experience embedded in every street or square. I'm driven by a curiosity about how cities evolve and how design decisions can create clarity, connection, and meaning in everyday life. My approach is therefore both strategic and reflective: where spatial systems meet human stories.
Approach
Observe
Spend hours in a single place. Notice what others pass through.
Measure
Document the flow of human movement, how the space is used, what kind of interactions take place here, what does this space remind me of?
Narrate
Transform technical observation into stories that breathe.
