Mapping the Construct of Time and Transit

Critical Observation

I observed that urban spaces function as personal, temporal constructs where the meaning of a journey is defined by the individual experience of movement rather than just physical distance.

Yesterday evening I attended the Urbanistas Rotterdam Sketch Party, my very first Urbanistas event, and I thoroughly enjoyed it."

"The task was simple yet powerful: each of us sketched our own journey through the city to the final location, mapping the impressions and key moments that stood out along the way."

"For me, traveling from Amsterdam to Rotterdam highlighted how distance on a map only becomes tangible through time. It reminded me that "time is a construct", a framework we use to make sense of movement and connection. Much like a map: the land remains, just as time itself remains. What changes is how we navigate it, and how we choose to mark meaning along the way."

"It was inspiring to see how individual sketches revealed such unique ways of experiencing the city, reminding us that urban spaces are not just physical, but also deeply personal and temporal."

"Am curious - how would you map your own journey through the city?"
