A Day Out in the Veluwezoom

Critical Observation

The deliberate disconnect and physical distance required to reach the Veluwezoom act as a necessary transition from everyday urban rhythms and are part of the experience itself!

A day out in the Veluwezoom!

The Veluwezoom is publicly accessible, yet it sits far enough outside our everyday urban routes that reaching its heathlands and viewpoints requires a deliberate journey, and perhaps that distance is part of the experience too. For me, leaving the familiar urban landscape behind was a sweet treat that let me slowly see the scale and character of another landscape begin to reveal itself.

I took one of the longer walking routes, which turned out to be a great way to experience the different landscapes the Veluwe offers: from enclosed forests to open heath and wide views across the hills. Now I will spare you the gory details, but I found it particularly interesting that the sandy soils, despite being dry and relatively poor in nutrients, create exactly the conditions in which heathland can thrive. And in late summer, that otherwise dry, rugged landscape transforms into incredible stretches of purple!!

Spending the whole day walking through these changing landscapes also gave me room to slow down and let my thoughts settle. It all falls into place like a puzzle piece!
